On the Saturday before Labor Day, thousands gather in the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, Nevada to burn a giant wooden statue. It's called Burning Man. It's a stupid and futile gesture, as is this, but it's all about participating and having fun. This event will be held on the Saturday after Labor Day. It's called Burning Micro.

We like to say that it’s not about the numbers because we all know that more caches does not necessarily mean better caching. The game played by overachieving underachievers who aim at the easy ones and brag how many inevitably leads to the phenomenon known as Micro Spew™ that is epidemic wherever these spew olympians dominate the scene to the detriment of those who seek more than an opportunity to increment their find count. We don't care how many guardrails you have kissed! It's time, once again, to have another big fire and burn some more micros!

There's going to be a bonfire. A guardrail will be scorched and some film canisters will be burnt. If this offends you, you need not attend. The event will begin at 2:00 PM and the burn will be at dusk (approximately 7:30 PM).

This event will be held on the property of my parents in rural Greensburg. It will be essentially the same as last year, the year before, the year before that, and previous events held at this location. The kids will enjoy the "rides" that we have set up in the woods. Pets with well-behaved owners are also welcome to attend. Bring an entrée (burgers, dogs, etc.) for yourself and a covered dish (chips, cookies, potato salad, etc.) to share with fellow geocachers. I will supply a gas or charcoal grill for cooking. I'll also supply tables, chairs, plates, cups, napkins, plasticware, and drinks. Beer will be available but we expect any drinking to be done in moderation. This is a family affair. Anyone who overindulges will be sacrificed on the micro pyre. We think that we'll probably spend most of our time socializing and putting names and faces to geocache logs but we expect for there to be a few temporary caches plus some other activites unique to Burning Micro such as the ever-popular spud guns. Please stay tuned to this page for more details.

It's difficult to offer driving directions except to say that we are on Route 819 between South Greensburg and Armbrust. Fortunately, this should not be too much of an issue for this group. If you need better directions, please email.

Free camping is available. Please register here.

Please RSVP by posting a note to this page. This event is also listed on GPSgames.org and Terracaching.com.

It is rare these days we see any donations come through to the site so I was quite surprised (and pleased) to recive one today and find that Navicache was chosen to receive part of the proceeds from the 50/50 Raffle at this event. It is much appreciated and will help cover this months hosting cost for the site.

Unfortunately it was too far away for me to attend personally, but it sounds like all that attended had a really good time which is good to hear. After all that is what geocaching is all about.

Thanks again

This was our second year to attend, and we had a blast. We got there earlier this year and got to try the temp caches with Mooman and Skwerl, which had us laughing all afternoon. Courtney had a ball with Lil mudge and the little skwerls. She also liked the Hanna Montana cache that antaries put out. She wasn't ready to go home. I must say, the time did fly by and I could have hung out with that gang all night talking. Thanks QM for hosting this event again. Also, thanks LJ for the awesome meatballs! See you all next year!

Made a long drive directly from Boston for just this event. Once again I brought the most micros to their deaths. This was the first year I went over to watch the potato cannon and Kordite's bottle rocket all of which was very entertaining. Always glad to come and participate in this great event. It is too bad that this year the spew seems to be getting a foothold in the area. Had a blast talking cache with many great friends and meeting a few new people. The food, conversation, and burning plastic crap was great.

Thanks for another great one, QM.

We had a great time at our first burning micro event. Thanks Questmaster for hosting such a fine gathering. The food was great (loved LJ's meatballs). The weather turned out to be fantastic and it was so nice sitting around the bonfire with everyone. We got to hear some fun stories which kept us laughing most of the night. We also wanted to thank Skewrl and Mooman for talking us into coming. We had a blast. We'll be looking forward to next year.

Thanks, QM, for being such a great host! All of the temp caches were as lame as ever, but at least we had to take a hike through the woods to snag 'em! It was nice to meet some newbies and, as always, enjoyed BSing with the "usuals"! I also had a really nice, relaxing time just hanging out around the campfire after most of the crowd had left. Next year I'm signing up for Banned Camp!

Was nice to meet Grayfinders, TWU and Krazy Skwerls (sp?) and to see Rev Mike and Nessie247 again, as well as Klatch, Vertumnis and Paarker. Had a wonderful time caching with D@nim@l prior to the festivities and was glad the rain held off all day... I really expected to get soaked at some point, but that never happened. Thanks QM for hosting yet again this year!

Well, this certainly lived up to expectations. Upon arriving, I was shocked to hear one of the lame temporary caches was named in my honor! It turns out it was a hiding method that is common in my area. Now that was funny. Nice hill, I only had to rest twice on the way back up, and almost got hit by a flying potato while doing it. My son wasn't shy about taking the last raffle ticket from that temporary cache, and it turned out the be the winner for getting to light the micro pyre. If anyone has pictures of that (and I know several were taken) PLEASE contact me and send me a copy; that's a no brainer for my profile pic at the Frog website. It was great to finally meet QM, as well as others fighting the good fight in the forums (Doc Ditto, Klatch, Antaries and D@nim@l). Thanks to LJ for the amazing meatball sandwiches, glad I got one of those before they were gone. Looking forward to the next time, and hoping I can spend a lot more time in the area then.

We arrived a little later than we probably would have liked, only because we were finding a few quality caches on the way down from Buffalo. Thanks for the quick and pleasant greeting you gave us when we arrived. The special temporary cache dedicated to Urkel was fantastic! And of course the burning of the guardrail was the icing on the cake. Thanks for a great time QM.

The temp caches (especially Urkel's Summer Circular) were hilarious. Who else but QM would have transported the implements of modern number-crunching into a more suitable setting? As always, the games, food, temp hides, and other entertainment ("bottle rockets", potato gun, micro burn, Grand Appenger succession, etc.) were first rate. Thanks QM and family, as well as volunteers, for all your work getting this up and running again this year on behalf of the "geocaching community". Glad the steady string of hurricanes didn't rain us out, and that we didn't have a duststorm like the original "Burning Man" out west did this year.

Even with the unexpected early departure we had a find time. Three of our crew had a great time for the fourth year in a row. This year's crowd and the burn was a bit more subdued, but the addition of the trampoline kept Nellsnake #4 busy and the dueling pop bottle rockets courtesy of Kordite and tater gun courtesy of Drossdross made for interesting side-by side entertainment. All of the accoutrements and great company made for another spectacular event. We found all four of the temporary caches nearby on the premises and even won a raffle item because of it.
