Down past Marcellus Falls is a place known as the flats. There is a parking area very close to the coords. A god forsaken place that is swampy, muddy, and very overgrown. The entire place is like that. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS UNPREPARED!!!! MARK YOUR PARKING COORDS!
I scouted this one about a week ago and almost didn't make it back. Very easy to get lost. at one point I could SEE the car, but couldn't remember how I got in. Kinda like the man in the desert that has water just out of reach. (Only had hiking boots, BAD IDEA. That's when I knew this was a perfect spot for a cache!) In the sea of 1.5 -2.5's there's finally a 4/5! Yay? That's the closest I've been to panic in quite some time and I don't scare easily. Got turned around out there. (Left the cell in the car to boot). There used to be a spring on the side of the road, but a while ago the road collapsed, (Had a ton of rain years ago...) and they rebuilt the gorge Rd. The only thing I can guess at is that the spring was rerouted under the road resulting in the bog it is now. It was always wet down there, but nothing like it is now. Fast forward a week after my failed scouting mission. Totally prepared this time. Marked the car, brought the cell, had the waders... It was still a total nightmare getting back there. Heavy plant cover, tree limbs and trees under the muck, angry animals (Something was definitely not happy I was there, and did i mention 98% of the time you can't see halfway below your knees? Massive spook factor). I think this could very well be a very dangerous area. Very easy to fall. Luckily I took my time and didn't. Wife almost made me walk home after she smelled the swamp gas I brought back to the car on my clothes, not to mention the muck on my shoes! :). Cache is a white tin marked as a geocache, logbook is inside a black pill bottle inside the main container. Flooding wiping out the cache shouldn't be an issue. There is a fisher price Cake kit (Don't worry it's plastic) some pens, and the log bottle inside. BE CAREFUL DOWN THERE. Replace exactally as found, Thanks! One thing I would like to add is that before you head back, take a moment and just listen.... It feels like you're a million miles from anything out there... As harsh as it can be it's also a beautiful place mostly untouched by the human presence.. Post any pics you take! I'd love to see someone elses perspective on this wild untamed place! Congrats to Cosmonium for picking up a well earned FTF! You truly deserve it! |
