British Columbia totem pole in Windsor Great Park at Virginia Water This totem pole is one of two poles carved by Chief Mungo Martin of the Kwakiutl Indian Nation of British Columbia and this one was given to Queen Elizabeth II to mark the centennial of the founding of British Columbia in 1858. The other one, a precise replica of this totem pole, is sited in Vancouver, British Columbia, where there is also a cache. The coordinates given are those of the explanatory sign at the totem pole. You will surely wish to visit the pole, however it is not necessary in order to find the cache, which is 312 feet on a bearing of 17 degrees East of North from the pole. The cache is a dark green ammo box.

We did not realise it at the time but this was our first navicache! Lovely walk around the lakes on a warm and dry September day. Had my wife and her twin sister with me and great fun was had by all.

Had a nice walk around the lake with Team Sapper who dropped a travel bug into this one that I reccomended. Prior to that we'd also visited several navicache, including at Runnymede. A note for Steve: I was wrong when I said the lake had been made just over 100 years ago - it was made in about 1750 (took about 4 years, having been started in 1748). It was interesting to see the preperations for filming, including that large ship and what looked like a large granite building - I guess it was only cardboard :-) Will check it out on my next visit.

Open Log: Unrestricted June and I thought it was about time we looked for one of Sandvika's geocaches on navicache - and we were glad we did. We started by visiting our Copper Horse cache to drop in the dried out old logbook - dating back to 2001 ! We then grabbed a snack at the Saville Gardens centre, and took a walk to the totem pole - well known to us locals. We thought we'd try WITHOUT using a GPS - and we did. I simply had a google earth printout showing the magic distance from the pole. We walked straight to the spot - and had no difficulty finding the ammo box. Hopefully I can upload the piccy taken by June. What a real pleasure to find a PROPER geocache and a log book you can write something in. This is where I made a silly mistake - writing that I'd left the printout and then leaving the google earth piccy in my pocket ! Then June showed my we were only 0.1 mile from another cache - she had put some software into her nokia phone earlier in the week - without telling me of course. We soon found the little microcache a few hundred yards walk away. What a pitty there was only room to put a date and names. We saw on both caches that Cakeman had visited before us on the same day. We found Centinial Totem Pole at 1530 and the microcache about 15 minutes later. Thanks for making our day the more enjoyable :-) | |
