Many a Summer afternoon as a boy living in Mobile, my friends and I would hop on our bicycles and head for the local swimming hole. It was a different time and a different world! And, the name of that swimming hole was "College Lake".

Spring Hill College was a "men's only" Jesuit college until 1952 and it was many years after that before there were more than a handful of women in attendance. "College Lake", a man-made, spring-fed lake was located deep in what was then the woods of Spring Hill College. Swimming trunks were optional because the lake remained a male-only province and was shielded from view by the thick woods.

My boyhood friends and I spent a good part of every summer around College Lake. I have fond memories of submerging myself in the coldest part of the lake where it was fed by the icy spring water. We called it "Dead Man's Coffin" and would compete to see who could stay in the frigid water the longest. We would dive from the large wooden raft in the center of the lake. We would ride our bicycles up and down the wooded hill. We would hunt snakes in the surrounding woods. We would have the time of our lives! Our parents wouldn't see us until dark!

Old College Lake is still there but no longer fit for swimming. You can still see the remnants of the wooden raft and if you probe around in the brush you will find the concrete benches we used to sit on, and yes - even "Dead Man's Coffin" can be found if you look hard enough. The lake itself is pretty much gone, but to many who spent their youth in Mobile, will NEVER be forgotten. Those were the good times!
