Organized in 1840, the Fishtrap United Baptist Church was one of the earliest log churches in Johnson County, Kentucky…Many area pioneers were baptized, wed and had their funeral services here…

Located atop a hillside on Blanton Road just off Kentucky Route #2275, the original church structure was listed on the Historic American Building Sites at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and was stated to be significant because of it’s notable simplicity and fine interior woodwork…The original structure built in 1843 was covered with weatherboard in the late 19th Century… In 1980 a new brick structure replaced the original building…

Adjacent to the church is the Persimon Point Cemetery, and final resting place for several area pioneers that persevered and established Paintsville nearby as a thriving city for Johnson County...

John and Calista Stafford who bear the namesake of nearby Staffordsville rest in peace here…The two established one of the area’s largest and most prosperous farms in it’s day.. Their son went on to become one of Paintsville’s founders and a leader of the development of what Paintsville has become today... Paintsville encompasses part of the original farm property with the farm house fully restored today...

Families like the Jaynes, The Bayes, The Blevins and the Woods and many more also interred here were instrumental in the growth of the area during the early years as well...

Persimon Point Cemetery is so named for the beautiful trees that adorn it’s slope... The view from this cemetery of the Paint Creek Valley below is incredible…

It is well worth the trip up to visit the history of this area and to enjoy the nearby mountainside scenery...

You do not have to enter the cemetery to find the cache… It is located along the perimeter of the cemetery outside of the fence... You will want to head toward the front of the cemetery to locate it... The cache is a camouflaged medium pill bottle with a statehood quarter, a marble and a dinosaur to start out with... Bring a pen and a love of history to find this cache...

Please be respectful of church service hours on Sunday mornings and wait until services are over to locate the cache…Be careful to secure the cache when replacing it.. It is out of plain site so you will need to trust the GPS and your instincts to find it...While here, pause a moment to remember how these courageous folk put their trust in God and worked this once harsh land to make the area what is it today...
