There is an old tale handed down through generations, of an old man that lived in these mountains once upon a time. This mountain man was named Jebediah Springfield, for whom Springfield Township may or may not be named after. As this story goes, Jebediah, was an old coal miner, that was known to be a bit strange and not all that friendly. Heck the old timers that still remember, him say, he was mean enough to hunt a bear with a switch! Well one day Jebediah was digging in his secret coal mine somewhere along the banks of Indian Creek, when he supposedly struck gold! Rumors of this find flowed up and down the Indian Creek valley, but no one ever saw old Jebediah emerge from those hills again. Some people thought that, either, he had been robbed and murdered for his gold by some local thieves, or that maybe he moved to the big city of Connellsville to spend his fortunes. Others say that the old mountain man just hid his treasure in those mountains and died there all alone guarding it from all that would come searching! This story may or may not be true, but it makes for a great story to start your caching adventure! The coordinates above will get you to the area where it is suspected that Jebediah may have hidden his treasure in a cave. Be sure to bring a flashlight and watch for critters of all kinds. Also watch out for old Jebediah, it is rumored he may be still around guarding his treasure. To get to the cache area, turn off of route 711 onto Sandy Flat road. There is no sign for Sandy Flat road, but the coords for the intersection are N40 00.846 W79 31.264. Follow Sandy Flat road to the parking area. You will be able to walk on the old road until about 280 feet from the cache. From there you will find one of the few deer trails that lead to an outcropping of rocks. There are a couple of ways to the cache area, and we have decided to let you choose your own way, but take some time to explore this area. I have included a cool rock formation that we called the amphitheater as a waypoint. The container for this cache was designed and built by quantumwatch, so, if you have found any of our caches before, you know you will need to figure how to open it. Please print out the cache page, and use the hints if you have trouble figuring it out. After you make your find, please put everything back the way you found it for the next adventurer to come along. We hope you enjoy this hunt and as always, be safe out there!

Several weeks ago i took my buddy Buddy to this cache, pretty sure he signed the log, hoping I am guessing close as to the date. The first time I ever did this cache, my friend John went with me, and he kept hollering 'there might be bears in there!' as we entered ground zero. I told him 'they just put a cache here, there's not gonna be a bear!' Ummm, yeah.... I just wanted to say I think that this is the best cache ever! I brought Jeff, Brandi and Bill the third time I returned. Heather and Chuck were the next victims of this stupendous cache. Billybob and I tromped up to it in the dark one night, roundabouts July of 08 or so. The dark is the best time to introduce a friend to geocaching with this cache! So that is six times at least, I'm probably forgetting a time or two. This log is on behalf of my Crew, who ALL enjoyed your cache very much. Thanks, CJ.

Wow! Yinz really went all out on this one! I'd call this cache the polar opposite of the proverbial lame micro.

All gave some... And some gave micros...

We really owe you for this outstanding and exemplary contribution to the sport of geocaching! I only hope that it doesn't get muggled before everyone gets to try it.

We knew the Sandy Flats road because we drove it once just to see what might be back in there. I have to say that it's stereotypical Cong with there being about 200 cars for 20 residents. We didn't explore around much on that occasion because we didn't have time and because we didn't know if the locals in these here parts would take kindly to strangers. We knew for dang sure that they know every vehicle and driver that's supposed to be back in there and we weren't that. Given that the Nutz said it was okay, we were encouraged to return, have a look around, and hunt for Jebediah's treasure. We were fortunate to be riding in my brother's jeep because it got us a little closer to our objective than we expected. It was a short hike to the coordinates which is probably a good thing because we had a five year-old in tow who wasn't used to this geocaching thing. My niece (who is the same age) would have handled this adventure a little better which just goes to show that it's all in how they are raised up. My 13 year-old niece Erin took the lead in guiding us to the cache. We were initially confounded at the walls of the fort before we figured out a way to enter Jebediah's hideout. What a cool place this is! We still didn't have a clue where the treasure might be until Erin went exploring into one of those places that curious kids will go. I heard a yelp and then laughter which made me think that she must have found something even if it wasn't the cache. She called out something to the effect that we should "come see this" so we followed the sound of her voice to a most curious spectacle. Awesome! We had a slight problem with the five year-old being terrified of this macabre scene but we managed to settle her down enough so that we could carry on with the business of finding the cache and making our trades. I don't remember the trades but I do remember that we did some. I left a Red Jeep TB.

Thanks so much for hiding this! It was an unforgettable hunt that we enjoyed immesely! I'm sure that I'll be coming back to show this one to others. And thanks for listing it here. This is everthing that a cache can be if it's not about numbers, numbers, numbers.

Johnny, Eric, Erin, and Leanna.

We loved this one! So did our cousin who we are trying to get interested in geocaching.

The imagination and work that went into this one makes it one for the record books.

Thanks for making for a great day.

We left one of our signature items and took a geocaching bracelet.
