The cache is located not far off an established trail. The cache container is a retired .50 cal. ammo can, painted green, with white lettering identifying it as a geocache. Its' location is very near the long ago retired Lock 62 of the original Erie Canal system, in Pittsford, NY. The cache location was not meant to be a serious challenge, but rather to highlight a little bit of history of days gone by. Back in the days when narrow packet boats were one of the main means of transporting goods on a New York to Buffalo route. The cache is the same one that I pulled from the "Tinker Nature Park", so, aside from some items I've added, the contents are pretty much what cachers have put in it. Quite a variety. Bring the family along & look back in time. There are no plaques or signs there that tell the locks story, but many web sites are available that tell the canals history dating back to the late 1800's. Enjoy.

Great hiding spot. Never knew this was here. Took a while to find since there are many spots to hide the cache. TNLN. Thanks.

This was an enjoyable cache. Would never had know this area was even there. Took a dollar, left 3 new items, signed the log.

Catching up on some back logs. Found this wonderful cache on 7/12/04 while waiting for my car to be fixed.

Couldn't find this on our first attempt, but found it later, in the rain, after climbing through a lot of underbrush. Don't wear nice clothes looking for this one! It isn't exactly "near the trail". Anyway, this was the first cache I've ever found and I signed the logbook, took a Furby and left something which now entirely escapes my mind but must have been wonderful at the time.

My second time to the cache, but went with White Foot, a friend visiting from Ottawa, who did the searching and found the cache. Traded two small compasses for crayons.

What a great day to explore the Erie Canal. Bright, brisk, not a snow flake in the sky. Passed a couple who were having their lunch on the bench by the lock. Impressive how this once busy lock is now a tranquil location on the fringe of economic activity.

MY FIRST CACHE EVER! Found it on my second attempt (see entry from two weeks ago) Learned an important lesson about datum. It was about 15 degrees out, and buried in about a foot of snow. It took awhile I will admitt, but I thought I was getting close, and persisted. Scared a rabbit out of hiding in my searching. Finally my foot hit something hollow, and EUREKA! I left a piece of black obsidian rock and a black walnut chewed open by a flying squirrel found nearby. I took the golfball. Thanks Gimpy for a great cache, love the lock! -jackbear-

Well, I didn't find it, but I know why...
1) I am a first-timer 2) I didn't bring a compass or a map 3) I have an old GPS with a not-so-good navigation system 4)the snow was rather thick, and very crusty. However, I am not frustrated, rather determined to try again. I had a beautifully cold Rochester winter afternoon, with not another sole around. I saw a Carolina Wren, and lots of black walnuts chewed open by flying squirrels. Can't wait to get back there again.

Casey and I went looking for this one when it was first placed. We had no luck and spun around in the woods. That wasn't the case today, our newer gps lead us right to the cache this time. We traded george dollars and off to the next cache we went. Thanks for the hide Gimpy.

I would never have known that this historical spot was hidden behind the stores. Harburu and I were geocaching together today - he's familiar with the area, but this was his first geocache. We got a late start because it had been raining. Took nothing and left nothing.

A beautiful short hike with plenty of history to soak up. We met up with team BKulp, and jointly seached the area. They found it first, and we all went up and logged in. We left a Stewart Little airplane which team BKulp took, and we took a red Silly Putty.

We enjoyed the short history lesson about the Canal, and it was nice to meet fellow cachers.

Thanks for the hide,

How cool! I wandered around a bit before realizing that I had transposed two numbers (was wondering why the Garmin wanted to steer me to the middle of a parking lot!) but a quick call to online backup solved the problem and I walked right to the cache area. I stopped to take a bunch of pictures along the way, and even managed to get a shot with both my car and the lock in it. Coords were right on and I had no trouble walking up to the nicely-hidden cache. Pity that the partiers in the area aren't a little more thoughtful - definitely a good place to bring a trash bag, you could rack up a few bucks in deposits from the bottles lying around. The rest of the area was pristine and quite interesting, too! Thanks for showing me this bit of history!

A real nice hike to a very interesting place. As usual Gimpy your cords. brought me right to the cache. GPS said 3 feet while I was logging in. Took/left nothing except a couple of pictures of the old lock. Missed my buddy Country Boy Gary and his friend Buzzard by about 3 hours. Thanks Gimpy for the hike to a real neat place.

Gimpy, this was number 100 for me on Geocaching.com. Wanted it to be one of your caches
because there is no one in this game that has done more for the sport. Thanks for this cache, all
your others, and advice to me and people I referred to you. You have always had time to share
your knowledge. Enjoyed meeting lowerfalls, and visiting the old lock. Great day to be out there.
Looking forward to my next 100 and your continued friendship!

Found it, but I wasn't the first. Rippie apparently was there this morning. And Junglehair was there looking for it when I got there, and I had just started looking when she found it. CB from the Delta Team showed up a few minutes later. We all three stood there in woods chatting away until I finally decided I should head back to work. Had a nice chat with Junglehair on the way back to our cars. Lots of fun! Thanks Gimpy!
