Between 1740 and 1854, this part of the North Kent coast was under the insidious control of the Seasalter Company, a fraternity of smugglers. The "Free Trade" engaged in a continuous subterfuge with the Riding Officers and Coastwaiters of the Customs, transporting their contraband from the beaches to hiding places in the hinterland by dead of night.

One of the many routes taken by the smugglers with their packhorses and carts was from the beach near the "Blue Anchor" via Seasalter and Foxes Cross to the Canterbury Turnpike. This route led them through the dark, wooded, heights of Blean Woods to St Dunstan's Brewery, Canterbury, which was owned by one of their number. There, they could cache their illicit goods.

Our cache is at a lonely spot on one of their old routes. These were violent men. Stand close to the cache site, and note the little lane called "Pilgrims Lane". This was the way the smugglers came, but in their day, it was known as "Cut Throat Lane". Be quick searching for the cache, and listen for the sound of approaching horses hooves!

The cache is a small container, painted to be inconspicuous and magnetically attached.
