Bodleian Library

Established: 1602

By: Sir Thomas Bodley

Oxford University, U.K.

~~~ A Brief Summary Of Library History ~~~
The Library was the creation of Sir Thomas Bodley, a Merton scholar and diplomat for Queen Elizabeth I. The University's original library had been destroyed and dispersed in the turbulent wake of the Reformation.
After almost 50 years of grim vacancy, Bodley undertook to refit the Old Library rooms and restock its shelves with his own extensive collection of books and manuscripts. He enlisted the help of friends, raised loans and private subscriptions, and on 8 November 1602, the Library, now named for its chief patron and prime mover, was formally opened.
Today, the Bodleian houses more than seven million volumes spread through a variety of buildings, serving students and researchers from all over the world: a mightly legacy of immeasurable benefit to posterity.
In 2000, the Bodleian itself was incorporated into a new library system, the Oxford University Library Services (OULS), into which all the centrally-funded libraries of the University are being integrated under a single management.
