New ! This cache, first planted on 9th September 2001, was replaced with printouts of logs from the old cache
that "went missing", on 5th March 2002, then again on 30th December 2004 - complete with a new camera :-)

The Caesar's Camp geocache is a large tupperware box hidden in the ancient iron age fort near the "Look Out" centre in Swinley Forest, near Bracknell.

The cache is hidden within 350 metres of the B3430 Nine Mile Ride road, and there is a spot with just room for one or two cars, near the old Caesar's Camp gate. However, for safety and pleasure reasons, it is reccomended that you use the free car park of The Lookout which is well signed. The Lookout is named after the steel tower from within the relatively new building complex. You can climb this, but the view is hardly worth the effort - since most of the surrounding trees are now higher :-) However, the centre includes a nice little snack bar, a sort of "wildlife museum", and a little shop - in which to buy junk for geocaching :-)

You can hire bicycles, at about £8 for two hours each, and this is a good option. It is suggested that you pick up a map of Swinley Forest for 50p (£0.5), some leaflets, and perhaps have a coffee while you plan your walk.

Swinley Forest is a large area to explore, and is adjacent
to the military training area known as Barossa used by soldiers being trained at the Sandhurst Military Academy, to the south west. To the west is Broadmoor Hospital, home of the criminally insane - including a few Geocachers :-) The Lookout Visitor centre organises lots of events, including "Bat Hunts" in the late autumn evenings.

As with all our Geocaches, like Virginia Water and The Copper Horse, you should have no difficulty finding it, and should not need to scratch yourself on brambles - but they are there if you want to :-) The tupperware box was left full of "goodies" for most categories of finder, including children.

You will know when you are near Caesar's Camp, since the pine trees give way to older oak, chestnut and beech trees, and the terrain is a little more hilly. Caesar's Camp is an Iron Age hillfort, built around 700BC. Maybe it was named due to the Romans camping here several hundred years later ? There are military earthworks (redoubts), constructed for exercises in 1792, and concrete tank traps and defences for training during the Second World War.

More information on Swinley Forest can be obtained from: The Lookout, Discovery Park, Nine Mile Ride, Bracknell, Berks RG12 7QW, UK. Tel +44 (0) 1344 354400.

Our first Geocache find!
We found it using a TomTom One SatNav as my Palm T3 + Bluetooth TomTom GPS didn't want to play ball and fix on any satellites until an hour later!
We played noughts and crosses with the game in the box and then put it back. We put in a packet of GoGo Crazy Bones (Series 3), but took nothing.
The contents of the box were rather damp, including the camera, so we didn't take a photo.

Found with Rangerchuk (along with the nearby Ceasar's Fort Terracache). One of the biggest caches we've found, played tic, tac, toe with the little game then put it back for others to enjoy.

The cache was rather damp inside, I'd recommend a maintenance visit just to dry it (and it's contents) out. We didn't try the camera as the inside of the lens had condensation on it.

A nice big cache in a beautiful and historical area, more people should visit this cache. Thanks for setting it.

Welcome to geocaching Clare ! :-) Checkout www.gpshobby.info and the Lovelock Caches to find out which ones are at the top of the list, and then use the Navicache link like this page. My guess is that you may not have entered the lat/lon correctly into your satnav. e.g. the lat/lon for this box (to wihin 5 metres or so) is N 51° 23.094' W 000° 45.574' - that's 51 degrees 23.094 minutes, etc. i.e. degrees and minutes and decimals of minutes. Some satnavs may not allow this format to be entered. e.g. they may require it in decimal degrees. So you would need to do some arithmatic, based on 1 degree = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds. So you divide the 23.094 by 60 to get 0.3849 So the latitude becomes 51.3849 so, if your satnav needs it entered in decimal degrees, the box will be at 51.3849 -0.75957 (West is negative, east is positive) Sorry about all the arithmatic, but it might save you spending money. If you do buy a handheld GPS, something like the cheapest yellow Garmin etrex, at about £100 should be what you need. If you're rich, you could get a Pocket PC based GPS and use our free software on www.gpss.co.uk Have Fun ! :-)

This was our first attempt at geocaching and we really enjoyed it. Managed to find the iron fort at Caesar's Place - we never knew it was there before!! However, we couldn't find the box. We used just a Sat Nav - do we need to invest in a GPS? Any recommendations?

5th cache of the day on our walk around Bracknell Forest. Our 2 GPS were pointing in different directions. Checking the entries we found that one had the wrong coords entered ;-) The logbook was frozen and I had some trouble to force the pages open. TFTC

After escaping the wet and foggy North Downs in the morning, I took the opportunity to get a little fresh air on the way west. The path looked a little muddy at first, but this wasn't too bad and better-drained land quickly appeared as I approached the Iron Age fort.
Although the cache was well hidden, the hiding place was easy to spot and the box quickly obtained. It's still damp inside, but I tipped out a small amount of water and the log book is fairly dry. The sun came out for the first (and last!) time of the day just as I signed the log.
Thanks for the stroll to a fine little part of the world.

I came here from the Lookout. I've walked past the southern end of the site before, without being aware of the existence of the fort. What an impressive earthwork it is.

I found the cache easily - it is a large box by modern standards. Unfortunately there had been substantial ingress of water since the last visit. I couldn't see why that should be; the lid was fitted securely and there were no obvious faults with the box. Maybe the weight of the wood resting on top distorts the lid? The little seal soft toy must have been at the lowest point in the box as it had taken the brunt of this - the rest of the contents were damp or superficially wet, but the seal was sodden through.

I tipped out the water and dried it as best I could. I didn't particularly want a small sodden seal, and I'm afraid it is probably 'trading down', but I swapped it for a plastic game because leaving it in the cache would have been detrimental to the rest of the contents.

The log book, inside a plastic bag, was damp but still writable.

This has been my third NaviCache in 2 days - I'm almost a veteran :-). Now I'm off to do my first ever TerraCache.

Thanks for this cache, and for bringing me to an interesting area for an enjoyable walk.

Rgds, Andy

What a lovely surprise to find this cache exactly as it was when June and I checked it over two years ago. I saw from the paper log book that there had been one visit since then, by Isobel and Angela, back on 21 August 2002. After writing in the book, I put the cache safely back where it was, and started the pleasant walk back to the Lookout, to check the cache there - it was :-)

June and Robin replaced the cache by a bigger box and with dry contents including a new log book. This includes printouts of the log entries below and those from logs of geocaching.com before they archived our page for this cache. Then we did the Lookout cache - and found it was still in excellent condition and well looked after :-)

Found the cache quite easily. This is my first cache find on Navicache as I usually use Geocaching.com.

It looks very much like the cache has been abandoned. It's in very poor condition: the log book is saturated (more like a waterlog book :>) )and therefore unusable; the handful of gifts are in an equally poor condition..... and the box doesn't close properly so things can only get worse with the cache, if that's possible!

On the positive side, the co-ordinates are spot on.. and it's always nice to find one whatever the condition.
