The RiverThe Windsor Castle Geocache is placed near head height, behind leaves, within arm's reach from the surfaced path, a short walk within sight of Windsor Castle. The original Windsor Castle cache was planted by Robin and June on 9th September 2001, but this is a replacement in a new spot. There is an art gallery exactly 300 metres due west of the cache, although we agreed that the exhibits on the west bank were of a far higher standard than those on the east bank.

The SpotThe cache can be reached by foot with a pleasant walk from the Castle and centre of Windsor, by simply walking over the footbridge to Eaton, and then left onto a field - from where the best views of the Castle are to be seen. So this is an option for tourist geocachers, taking a daytrip to see Windsor Castle. This is a good area for a picnic. Those with a car can choose if they want to park on the Windsor or the Eaton side of the river - where there is some free parking on the small roads.
The Long Walk If you want a really good, long stroll, take "The Long Walk" from Windsor Castle to "The Copper Horse" to find the geocache there. "The Long Walk" is about 3 miles, so that would be about eight miles there and back. However, you will find plenty in Windsor to see, including the Castle and lots of other tourists :-)

This one has been on my list for a long, long time. But though it's not too far from where I live, there is one thing about it that prevented me from just jumping on my motor-bike and coming over here. It's an ideal cache to do on a boat trip to Windsor, moored up at the Brocas.

So I reserved it for such a boat trip, and today we came here. "We" was myself, my middle daughter Bex and three of her friends. And it was fitting that Bex found the very well concealed cache.

One of the advantages of using the "minor" caching sites is that you get more milestone caches, and I'm now very close to a NaviCache milestone :-) . Stats as of today:

Groundspeak 2341
TerraCaching 79
NaviCache 49
OpenCaching 154
Some are cross listed, so total unique 2529

Thanks for the cache, still safe and sound despite the length of time that had elapsed since the previous find.

Found eventually after much searching, I Paf for some advice and getting my hands stung by the nettles. The cache has some great views of the castle. TFTC

June and I visited the spot during a nice walk on Saturday 25 Oct 08 and we quickly found the old lid and label - which we took away to avoid confusion. The new cache was placed within 10 metres of the spot (maybe much closer) and I've updated the words above. i.e. the new cache is near head height, behind leaves, and within arm's reach of the surfaced path. Many Thanks for reporting this one missing. Enjoy caching and your walks ! :-)

Thanks for trying Gary. Guess it has gone for good. I'll update my list on www.gpss.co.uk/geocache update this page to "retire" it, and hopefully replace it with something nearby fairly soon.

I also think this is gone for good..
I had a look for this today on my way down to the Thames, beat my way through the nettles and had a good look around GZ.
The only things found were the laminated geocache welcome card half buried in some ivy, and a semi buried Tupperware type lid. Given that the card was out in the open , I think this has gone

After finding the "new" Windsor Castle cache, I thought I should find the "original" one; well, at least its replacement.

I arrived in Eton by road from Dorney and as I passed a substantial structure I realised I'd passed the cache location, so I parked and walked. I chose a "bridleway" between the substantial structure and some allotments. Mistake! There were nettles approaching head height and I got stung through my trousers. I found an iron pole and used it to bushwhack my way through the nettles. I was beginning to doubt my approach when suddenly, I came upon a paved footpath. On my way back I established that it runs on the opposite side of the allotments and emerges on the same road, so I'd recommend this approach - it's about 0.3 miles to the cache location from the road.

Unfortunately there was a fair amount of evidence of human activity at the cache coordinates and a large bag of rubbish wedged under a branch which I initially mistook to be the cache. It's possible that the cache is still there, consumed by nettles, however I spent a fair while in the area surveying ground zero from every angle and am fairly certain in my own mind that the posted coordinates are just a little to the north of the most obvious cache hiding site and that the cache is not the be found at either location.

Thanks for the hunt Robin, Roderick

We put in a new cache at a new, better spot today. Many of the places, including the old spot, had lots of rubbish. This is a much nicer place. We have no idea where the old cache went. Enjoy ! :-)
